I have not written a blog post in a long time. But I do have some major news as far as my home office goes. I have finally bought a new PC! I had been using the same PC for over 10 years. I saw no reason to upgrade since it ran fine and met my needs. However, a lot of my software stopped supporting Windows 7 and I don’t think that old system was ready for Windows 10. I was having trouble running Firefox which could take up to 15 minutes to load. I could not even read my email without bogging down the PC, probably because my Outlook data file was several gigabytes.
My new PC is a gaming PC so its technical specifications are quite impressive compared to my old system. It has 16 GB of memory which is twice as much as my old system. The CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core 3.8 GHz with 8 cores and 16 threads. The GPU is a GeForce RTX 3080. The video card is huge. It is the largest thing in the computer case and about twice the size of some of my single board computers. The computer case is twice as wide as my old tower and has nine fans. Running this PC sounds like being in a server room. A one terabyte SSD card provides all the storage. As a gaming PC it has a lot of RGB lights so it looks very colorful.
My new PC is running Windows 11. This did cause some problems since my scanner and printer don’t have drivers for that operating system. I also don’t have a DVD/CD drive but I do have an external USB drive I can use. I switched from Outlook to Thunderbird as my email client and now emails render properly and I can organize them better.
I had to move my old PC to the back room and set up a complete work station.I still need it for printing and scanning.
I took a long time to get this PC ready to replace my old system. I had to install a lot of software. Occasionally I need to boot up my old PC to use the printer or copy some data. Now that I have a legitimate gaming PC I have gotten into gaming. Currently I am addicted to the game Elden Ring. It is a fantastic online fantasy world I can explore. The game itself is very difficult and frustrating, but when I get stuck I can go back to doing minor quests to gain better weapons. It has taken me a month to learn the game mechanics. I am sinking a lot of time into this game.
